For the people who is or has been to Kuching before, should know they have a few local hawker dishes which everyone must try, notably the kolo mee (哥罗面), laksa and tomato sauce mee. I have never tried all of them before simply because 1) I've never been to Sarawak before and 2) I've never come across them locally in JB.

For the convenience of those who have never ever come across this before, 哥罗面 are egg noodles traditionally served dry, with minced pork, shallots and sliced barbecued pork/chicken (char siew). It is somewhat similar to our version of wanton noodles, minus the wanton and chilli. Of course the noodles are different too, with texture, consistency and thickness relatively close to instant noodle.

The shop today we are heading to, made and distribute the noodles themselves. They have a few varieties of the kolo mee to choose from as toppings, shrimps, deep-fried fish, char siew (chicken), mixture of the 3 or the big bowl noodle (大碗面, with larger prawns and slices of 贵妃鲍片). For people new to this area, the place could be a wee bit challenging to locate without a GPS, since its nested inside a secluded housing estate.

For a start, you can try this very interesting concoction, three-colored milk tea (三色奶茶) @ RM2.50 a glass. Rating: 6.5/10

Highlight of my breakfast, Kolo mee (哥罗面) topped with vegetables, minced pork and 3 slices of barbecued chicken. The home-made char siew was a surprise in the package, tender, nicely seasoned and slightly burnt on the outside. That's how it should be .. Priced at RM4.50 a bowl. Rating: 8.0/10.

Duly rewarded with a satisfying & sumptous breakfast, after going up, down and around hilly slopes. All worth the effort.

I ordered takeaway for my parents to let them try. They love it, and is heading back again tomorrow. O_o

Price: 6.5/10
Service: 7.0/10
Conclusion: Two consecutive visits in 2 days to the place should speak for itself. Situated between Taman University and enroute to Kedai Lima/Gelang Patah, you can make a small detour (less than 5 minutes), stop over for a quick meal and head onwards to your destination. Recommended.

  2. A definite yes ... but the taste of their other foods has room for improvements. I've tried out their 滑蛋河粉 and 茄汁河粉。 Both also not satisfactory. There's another item 树子菜面 which I will give it a try on my next trip there.
