It was my Mother's birthday so she suggested going to some place new to celebrate instead of our favourite joints in town. She was informed Cathay Restaurant is very famous in Kulai and coincidentally, it happened to be owned by the family of my brother's friend. My brother was there once to attend the friend's wedding, and he commented the food was good.

So we made the long trip there, getting lost along the way, and finally rescued by the GPS, albeit leading us to the back of the restaurant. It's a building on its own and I was surprised by the sheer size of it, but of a smaller scale to Grand Straits View.

Orders were promptly taken and was told by the waitress, stewed pork knuckle is one of their signature dish. As tempted as my mum was to order it, but sensing the dread on our face, she skipped it. Afterall, we just had German pork knuckles the previous day.

We didn't have to wait long for the first dish to be served. Cold plate platter comprising of 6 different mini dishes. They have the otak satay, fried shrimp dumplings, cold cut geoduck slices, deep fried spring rolls, meat rolls and meat balls. Rating: 7.0/10.

Cute little bunny standing guard over our food.

Some close ups of the mini dishes.

Shrimp dumplings.

Deep fried spring rolls.

and fried meat balls

Next up, Braised longevity noodles. You have quail eggs, shrimps, mushrooms, shallots in it. That single item on the menu which you couldn't do without when celebrating one's birthday. Rating: 6.5/10

Some leafy greens, Stir-fried cabbage. Rating: 6.5/10

Sweet & sour fish slices. Each and every slice of the fish is thick and meaty, different from what you would usually get in thin slices. Rating: 7.0/10.

A recommendation from the waitress, Signature beancurd. Comes loaded with shrimps, celery and clams. Good to go with rice, by simplying drenching it with the gravy. Rating: 7.0/10.

This has to be the highlight and the best of the lot in what we have ordered today, Steamed prawns with garlic (lots of it). The formula ... fresh prawns + garlic + semi-sweet soy sauce = great dish. Comes highly recommended and a must-order. Rating: 8.5/10

Price: 7.0/10
Service: 7.0/10
Conclusion: A luncheon that ends with mixed feelings for me. I have the opportunity to visit a new makan place, but was it justified to travel all the way to Kulai just for a meal that was above average at best ? It all boils down to the occasion and reason for being here, so for today its definitely a worthy trip.
